Personality Topic: Character Study
Cole is a person that is always laughing and making jokes, even when it is not funny or the place to do so. He is rarely in a bad mood and when he is in a good mood there is almost nothing that can make him not feel happy. He also loves being the at the center of the party but enjoys being able to stay home and just watch movies as well. Even though he likes to talk to a lot of people and be at the center of the party, public speaking terrifies him. He cannot do a speech in front of people to save his life. Just like in the readings, in a different situation, his personality differs. The same goes when he is around different people. I can always tell if he likes someone or not on the way he is joking around. If he is making a lot of jokes and laughing, then he likes the person. It is just like Walter Mischel said, “… that if one looks closely at people’s behavior across many different situations, the consistency is really not that impressive.” This is saying that people are not that consistent with their personality when they are with certain people. This, in today's society, is called being fake. This is one thing about Cole that I like, he is never fake. I am not saying that he is mean to the people he does not like, but he does not pretend to be their best friend and then talk bad about them behind their back. This happens a lot nowadays, all too often. Some more info on Cole is that he is pretty open to things in today’s society, but at the same time not. Openness is one of the personalities in the OCEAN test theories. It means to be open to new ideas and that is happening all around us today. the reading said that someone on the high end of this would be more open to body piercings, tattoos, and other stuff. Its more or less the “don’t judge a book by its cover” rule. Cole has nothing against people that have a lot of tattoos or piercings or people you are homosexual like some people do. Now saying this, Cole does not participate in any of this and does not intend to, but he is certainly not trying to make it illegal to do such things. This falls back on the theory that a person can be a little of both personalities and be caught in the middle on some. Like not all the way to the high or low end of any personality.
Now that you know a little about Cole, let's jump into the way he fits into the five-personality test and what that is all about. The five personalities are openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. I had him take a few tests to see what he scored on each one. In extroversion, he got a sixty-five out of a hundred. This means that he likes to be sociable and meet a lot of new people, yet he has some introverted tendencies. These would be that he can sit inside all day and watch tv, play fortnite (a video game) all the time, and loves to just hang out at the house with a few friends and watch a movie. Even with all of these introverted tendencies, he likes to go to parties with all of his friends, go bowling or paintballing, and even going to restaurants where we have a bunch of people go and eat with us. He does not want to go somewhere and hang out with people. Cole is just comfortable with everything. Saying this leads us to our next personality trait which is agreeableness. Like I just said, Cole is usually ok with anything. In this one, he scored an eighty out of one hundred. He is a more of a go with the flow guy that trying to be the person that always wants to do something else or if it does not go their way then they do not want to go. As long as Cole is with his friends, he is having fun and making the best of every opportunity. This connects us to the third of the five which is neuroticism. Neuroticism on the high end is “constantly worrying about little things; insecure; hypochondriacal; feeling inadequate.” This is the exact opposite of Cole, he always brushes off the negative things and never lets anything get in the way of him and everyone else having fun. In Neuroticism he scored a Fifteen out of one hundred. The next one is openness. On openness Cole score and Fifty which is not all that high because he is open to other people being how they want to be but does not want to do those things himself. So, he does not really judge people for what they do. The next and last one is conscientiousness which is when someone is never late to a meeting or a date, hardworking, and self-disciplined. The other end of this is someone that prefers “spur-of-the-moment” decisions, unreliable, careless, and relaxed. Cole is defiantly part of both sides of this. He is relaxed and makes decisions last minute, while also being almost never late, hardworking, and very reliable. Cole ended up getting a score of 60 on this particular one. So, in conclusion, Cole is pretty much at both ends of every personality. He has a like of everything in him.
I have known Cole from kindergarten to the end of freshman year in college and he has changed quite a bit. From the annoying little five-year-old that was always in trouble in my class to one of my best friends that is level headed, nice, funny, and the most positive person I know. His personality has changed in some areas and stayed the same in others. Like in the conscientiousness area, he has completely reformed himself, but in the neuroticism area, he has not changed a bit. I have even seen ways that he has change and ways that he has not changed just in the time that we have been dating as I am for sure that he has seen changes in me. This is how everyone is though, everyone throughout their life changes because of experiences, age, and maturity, and because of the people, they hang out with. All of these life changes and things that are around you everyday effect how you turn out as a person. Overall I agree with the way the personality test scored Cole and I think he does as well. I really enjoyed doing this and researching Cole and discovering all these things about him. Also, as a side note, Just by knowing him and his family, I believe that he is going to turn out just like his dad proving that your personality has everything to do with how you were raised and your experiences.
